Kissing Hand

Dear Parents:

We have been reading the book, “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn. It is a story about Chester who is a 5 year-old raccoon. When Chester the raccoon is reluctant to go to kindergarten for the first time, his mother teaches him a secret way to carry her love with him. She kisses his hand and tells him the kiss will be there always for him to feel. With the kiss, Chester finds the strength to overcome his fears about going to kindergarten. This story is one that the children immediately identify with. We have been reading and rereading the story using a raccoon puppet that helps the children become more involved with the story. They all want to help Chester and each other adjust to their new world in kindergarten.

You will find a cutout of a hand attached to this note. We would like to ask mom, dad or other significant adults to make a lipstick impression of a kiss in the middle of the hand and/or write a little love note to your kindergartener. Please remember to put your child’s name on the back of the hand. Please send them back to school and we will hang the hand on your child’s cubby.

Your child can then visit the hand at any point during the day for a kiss from home. This gives your child some extra security during these first few weeks of adjustment and helps build their independence.

We have also been singing the song:

“Skidamarink, I Love You”

Skidamarink a dink a dink. Skidamarink a doo! I Love You!
Skidamarink a dink a dink. Skidamarink a doo! I Love You!
I love you in the morning and in the afternoon! I love you in the evening underneath the moon! Skidamarink a dink a dink. Skidamarink a doo! I Love You!

We look forward to receiving your “love notes”!
